Eidaurus

The Sanctuary of Asklepios (Aescu-lapius) at Epidaurus was a famous place of healing. The ancient Greeks held a holistic view of health, and the Sanctuary included a theater, gymnasium, and stadium as well as traditional medical treat-ments.

Surrounded by natural springs and sacred woods, the sanctuary remained true to its original calling as a place of healing, holding itself aloof from war and power struggles.

The Theater at Epidaurus was built in the 4th century B.C. by the architect Polyclitus. In excellent condition today, it was and remains unrivalled in its acoustics. One of the largest and most impressive of ancient theaters, it could seat 14,000. Still in use today from June to August, classical tragedies and comedies are performed here and attract thousands of Greek and foreign visitors.
